Switching from Average to Median
June 3, 2025
As our data products evolve, so do the metrics we use to support more accurate, meaningful insights.
At Arrivalist, we’re updating how we report Time in POI, shifting from average time to median time. This change wasn’t made lightly, but we believe it better reflects both industry standards and the realities of location data.
Here’s why:
Alignment with industry norms: Median has become the preferred metric across the mobility and tourism analytics space. It offers a more stable, representative view of time spent without being skewed by extremes.
A cleaner reflection of actual behavior: Median reduces the influence of unusually long or short visits that can occasionally surface in location-based datasets, even when data quality is high.
Greater consistency across POIs of varying sizes: Median handles places with vastly different traffic volumes more fairly, helping ensure that high-traffic destinations aren’t disproportionately weighted.
Improved comparability over time: Median makes it easier to compare trends month-over-month or year-over-year, especially when volume shifts or sampling patterns change.
Better storytelling for stakeholders: Median values tend to reflect the typical experience more clearly, which makes insights more intuitive for end users.
